HOBOKEN, N.J. (WPIX)—
Police have shot and killed a pair of pitbulls after they attacked three people inside a Hoboken apartment early Friday morning. The attack occurred at 1 Independence Court, south of 14th Street and Senatra Drive.
"When we arrived, one of our sergeants had to discharge weapon against one pitbull, " said Capt. Anthony Romano of the Hoboken Police Department. "One of the victims was screaming in pain. It was chaos."
The other pitbull escaped the apartment but was quickly snared and tranquilized. It died shortly afterward.
The three persons, including one woman with traumatic injuries, were transported to Jersey City Medical Center. Reports say their injuries are non-life threatening.
"She's being torn to pieces," said neighbor Paul Michael who witnessed the attack. "There was blood everywhere, in the hallway in front of my door all the way down the hall right to the second mauled victim."
The names and ages of the victims were not immediately known.
The circumstances surrounding the attack were unclear and an investigation is underway.
Compiled data shows pitbulls, along with rottweilers, are involved in more dog bite fatalities than any other breeds of dogs.
Out of the 147 dog bite-related deaths reported in the United States over the past five years, 81 of them (or 66 percent) were committed by pitbulls.
