NEW HYDE PARK, N.Y. (WPIX) —
At around 10:50 p.m., police arrived at a Stop & Shop located at 653 Hillside Avenue at New Hyde Park Road to investigate reports of a suspicious masked person near the supermarket.
According to reports, the suspect may have been carjacking a nearby vehicle.
Police stopped the man, who was driving an allegedly stolen black Honda Accord, during a traffic stop at the supermarket's parking lot.
Witnesses told PIX News the man appeared uncooperative and pulled out a gun when officers shot him.
"The guy had a stolen car and he tried to get away," witness Jesse Rideout told PIX News. "I guess the cops must have pulled him over and he tried to get away."
Another witness told PIX News, "The guy who came out [of the car] pulled out a gun and they [the cops] shot him."
The Nassau Police Department would only confirm in a statement, "This is a police involved shooting and the shooting suspect is dead. No other information is available at this time."
The 27-year-old suspect was transported to nearby Long Island Jewish Hospital in traumatic arrest and was later pronounced dead. The man's name was not immediately released.
Family members of the suspect told police that he was with a woman, who was shopping at the Stop & Shop at the time of the incident.
The investigation is ongoing.
Wednesday evening, a man in Harlem was gunned down by police after he stabbed two men -- one fatally.
