QUEENS, N.Y. (WPIX)—
A Queens grandmother was struck and killed Thursday night on her way home from her own Birthday party.Concetta DiBenedetto, 78, was walking along 92nd Street - about a block from her home - when she was struck crossing 164th Avenue in Howard Beach. Cops say she was accidentally struck by a 2005 Jeep.
She was rushed to Jamaica Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The victim's daughter told the New York Post that she had been out to lunch with friends for her birthday, which is Friday. She asked to be dropped off at the corner, across the street from her apartment, so her driver didn't have to pull the car around. Her family says she never wanted to put anyone out of their way.
Her daughter - who saw the accident occur - says she knew her mother had died when she saw paramedics pounding at her chest, trying to detect a heartbeat.
DiBenedetto was born in Sicily and worked as a seamstress.
She is survived by her four children and four grandchildren.
