NEW YORK (PIX11)—
With roughly 6,000 sidewalk sheds up around the city, New Yorkers have seen it all when it comes to the temporary construction bridges, and there was one thing we heard over and over."They're ugly" one woman said about the structures.
Ugly. It's something everyone seems to agree on, and something the city's Buildings Department is planning to transform into a more aesthetically pleasing shed. Instead of steel pipes and plywood used now, the new look will be made from recycled steel and plastic panels. It will also be shaped like an opened umbrella.
"It's definitely a new idea for anyone to care what it looks like," a man passing in lower Manhattan said.
The Buildings Department says the new urban shed design will be an elegant way to protect people, but some construction workers we talked with say it's an unnecessary change.
"It's a pain in the but that will take more time to install at a higher price," a construction worker said.
It may be tougher to install, but if a company decided they want the new look, the price won't be much different than most custom structures covering high end stores or apartment buildings. The first one is expected to rise in the next few weeks in lower Manhattan.
