New York Sen. Charles Schumer says the big rise in health insurance premiums in recent years is one reason the country needs health care reform.
The Democrat says premiums in New York have gone up 81 percent in the past nine years.
Schumer favors the establishment of a government-sponsored, non-profit insurance plan; it would compete for customers with private companies.
Critics aren't convinced. They argue the government would do no better than the private sector running such a plan.
