According to exit polls, Democratic U.S. Senator Charles Schumer will keep his senate seat for a third term after defeating first-time candidate Jay Townsend, a political consultant.

Schumer was the clear favorite to win, and some are predicting that he will take the place of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid if the senator loses his re-election bid in Nevada. Schumer is currently the No. 3 Senate Democrat.

Schumer has given generously from his political bank account to other Democrats in closer races. Schumer saw his funds grow to $23.2 million as of August this year.
