BROOKLYN, N.Y. (PIX11)—
After all the plowing, and sanding, the "take cover" approach to the first snowfall of the year started melting away. Those shoveling snow didn't seem to mind the white powder blanketing the sidewalks."It's not too much snow. The plows were out early so there hasn't been a problem," one shoveler said.
Nearly 2,000 city workers were sent out on snow safety patrol. And once the snow preparations were taken care of, Hizzoner said it was time for fun.
"Our city parks are open. The Parks Department is offering sledding and free hot chocolate in all five boroughs," said Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
Of course, it was the duty of PIX11 to check out all the cold-weather activities.
We hit the slopes in Brooklyn's Prospect Park to find the premier sledding spot, and it wasn't long before we ran into some kids building a snow castle. People were everywhere skiing, playing football or making snow angels.
Meanwhile, if the first snowfall of Winter 2012 -- for whatever reason -- turned out to be more of a pain than fun, you can text the city about problems in your community at 311-NYC. For instance, if you text the city about unploughed streets, it will go directly to the Department Of Sanitation.
