PATERSON, NJ (WPIX) -
A suspect is on the loose Friday morning as he was able to elude apprehension.
Unconfirmed reports say police officers were chasing a suspect on foot at around 3:20am near the corner of Broadway and Straight Street in Paterson.
The suspect was being chased for illegal possesion of a handgun when he fired off shots at the cop, who then returned fire.
None of the officers were injured during the chase and no arrests have been made. Police are continuing their search and are checking local hospitals for anyone who recently received treatment for gunshot wounds.
Earlier at 11pm Thursday evening, another shooting occurred in Paterson. Three people were shot at the corner of Hamilton Avenue and Carroll Street, near Paterson Elementary School No. 6.
The victim's identities, extent of injuries and cause of the shotting was not immediately available, according to Paterson police.
It is unknown of this late-night shooting is related to the early-morning foot chase.
