Drop that Blackberry! A statewide ban on texting-while-driving has taken effect.
As of this Sunday, the law forbids drivers from using mobile devices for reading, typing and/or sending text messages behind the wheel. The fine is $150 for each infraction.
Talking on cell phones while driving in New York State has been illegal, since Nov. 1, 2001.
The U.S. Transportation Department says last year alone, distracted drivers talking on cell phones killed 5,870 people and injured 515,000.
