Nicknamed "Danimal" for his ferocious and dominating play on the defensive line, Hampton was the fourth player selected in the 1979 draft out of Arkansas, where played for coaches Jimmy Johnson and Lou Holtz. Hampton immediately became one of the linchpins in the defensive plans and philosophies of coordinator Buddy Ryan, who used Hampton at different positions in the legendary '46' defense. Hampton was named to the NFL Team of the '80s by the Pro Football Hall of Fame Board of Selectors and was named to the Pro Bowl four times (1981, 1983, 1985, 1986), twice at defensive tackle and twice at defensive end.
