The 21-year-old was a senior at Marist College, about to graduate in the spring.
Fitzsimons was one of three people killed last Saturday when a fire swept through an off-campus home that was being rented by six students at Marist. Four others managed to escape by jumping out of windows. So far, officials have not released a cause of the fire.
At a memorial service at Marist College earlier this week, students gathered to remember Fitzsimons, along with 21-year-old Marist Senior Eva Block from Connecticut and 21-year-old Kevin Johnson, a student at Dutchess Community College.
At the service, the President of Marist College said the school community is heartbroken after losing "three of our best in the prime of their lives - young adults full of promise, hope and love."
As for Kerry Fitzsimons, a scholarship has been set up In her name at Marist College. Donations can be sent to Marist College, Office of College Advancement, 3399 North Road, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601-1387. Donors can also call (845) 575-3863 or e-mail at marist.fund@marist.edu.
